Standard 3:  Collaboration & Leadership

The integral features necessary to be an effective Library Media Specialist’s are identified in Information Power’s Logo - collaboration, leadership and technology.  Connecting with others as part of a larger library community or in one’s own school supports the development of those themes.  Taking the lead, while working in partnership, is essential as we make room for technology and guide the vision of developing successful student learners.

Joining the American Library Association (AASL, YALSA and ALSC) as well as Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA) is an indispensable means for keeping connected to others in my field.  The artifacts included below, my submitted works, exemplify the benefits of collaboration as well as leadership as described in Standard 3
.

Artifacts:

Collaboration Unit
Collaboration is one of the key roles of the Media Specialist – working together with the teacher to support and enhance their unit of instruction with the goal of active student learning.  Integrating technology into the lessons is one means of achieving this goal.

This linked project reflects a collaborative effort between the 11th grade English teacher and myself where I created a Webquest for the students to learn more about events and characteristics of the 1920’s.  This approach was utilized as the teacher wanted to enhance the student’s understanding of the backdrop of the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  This contextual understanding of the novel added depth and brought the novel alive for the students, making learning more meaningful.

Inservice - INFOhio training and Educator Resources

Completing an Inservice project that would inform or enrich the knowledge base of its participants was one of the requirements for our practicum.  I had discovered that very few of the high school teachers were aware of, let alone accessed, INFOhio, a free and in-depth resource, available 24/7, that had a wealth of research resources for students and for teachers.  INFOhio promotes media and information literacy, student achievement, standards-based instruction, teacher effectiveness and technological competency.

To fill this gap I presented an inservice training for the teachers on INFOhio as part of the Technology Series being offered on a weekly basis at the high school usually by the Library Media Specialist.

Collection Development and brochure

We were asked to create a core reference collection for a school library as part of my Reference Services class.  This core collection was to include annotated bibliographies of the resources, a pamphlet advertising the materials/resources as well as a rationale that describes the collection and its development.  This assignment helped to encourage evaluating what resources are essential to have in a school library, to align the resources to support the curriculum.
